"I am very glad that I participated in the American Legion Constitution Oratorical Contest for two years, during my high school years at Richfield Springs Central School. I would highly encourage current RSCS students to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. I gained tremendously valuable experience in public speaking, writing, and expressing my ideas, as well as increasing my knowledge of American History, law and government. These are all things which served me well in my political science, philosophy, and history classes at college, and which continue to assist me as I begin the next level of my education at law school. The generous scholarship prizes were also an amazing benefit which helped me pay for my college education, and the contest is also an excellent lesson in civics and patriotism. I am especially grateful for the friendships I developed with local veterans and American Legion members from both our Richfield Springs community and across New York State. I would recommend that any student who has any interest in competing begin as soon as they are eligible in 9th grade. If any student has any questions about my experience in the contest, they are welcome to contact me at (315) 868-6184 or by email at vgelfuso@gmail.com."
