On Friday, Sept 27, Richfield Springs art students traveled to New Windsor, NY to visit the Storm King Sculpture Park. This is a very unique location. The Storm King website describes the place as: a 500-acre outdoor museum located in New York’s Hudson Valley, where visitors experience large-scale sculpture and site-specific commissions under open sky.
The Storm King collection shows off work by some of the world's most significant artists from the 1950s to present. Some notable artists include David Smith, Andy Goldsworthy, and Maya Lin among many others. Students went on a tram tour around the park and went on a guided walking tour with a docent to help students appreciate the many various types of sculpture. We only had enough time to get a basic survey of the place. There are many walking trails that go through the forests and fields which allow an infinite amount of viewpoints of all the sculptures across the facility. The balance of landscape and sculpture along with the grand scale of the park allows many reasons for return visits.
